The Top 20

I was recently at a function where someone made the offhanded comment "oh you always look good because you have money to spend on clothes". I know i've written this before but it is such a misconception that you have to spend a lot of money to look good (I was wearing two Asos items at the time- my getup hardly broke the bank!). It must be said that the person who made this comment did look deplorable. However I only mention this because it further enhances my point.

I have a very good friend of mine who always, always looks amazing and I happen to know that her clothing expenditure is considerably less than mine. She has three mouths to feed (5 including hers and her husbands) three little bodies to clothe and she drops quite a bundle on private school fees. Naturally a designer handbag or cashmere jumper isn't going to be at the top of her list of priorities. But she knows how to shop! buying pieces in neutral colours, that all match, spending money on investment pieces and updating her wardrobe with new seasonal pieces to keep on trend. This ensures that she always looks amazing and well put together. Definitely the hottest mum I know. She manages to look this good all the time despite sometimes having dealt with tantrums, spilt lunches, hair brushes being stuck in hair and children being sick all before 9am.

The problem with the girl with the deplorable outfit? clothes that were probably just thrown together, no on-trend items and no investment pieces. They might have been fine on their own but the pieces she threw together just didn't work. Enlisting the help of a stylist will help you to decide which pieces to keep, which to throw and how to edit your wardrobe to become full of pieces which just work together.

I've compiled a list of the top 20 items I recommend every one should have in their wardrobe. Basic pieces, that will allow you to pull together an outfit and look fab- even five years after purchase.

19. That one item that you absolutely love and couldn't resist having. It may be a designer handbag or a vintage piece you picked up for next to nothing at the flea markets. Its that one piece that makes you feel happy when you take it out/wear it. For me its always a cost to much but had to have it dress.

20. CONFIDENCE. It doesn't matter what you wear, as long as you are confident doing so. Having fashion confidence is the MOST important item in your wardrobe.
